30 km west of the Satsuma peninsula, Kagoshima, there lies Kami-koshiki island, Naka-koshiki island and Shimo-koshiki island in the East China Sea. The three linked islands were designated as a national park, for the scenery from the islands is indescribably spectacular. It is only a two hrs trip from Tokyo to Kagoshima airport, and from there an hr to the Sendai terminal port by bus. From the Sendai terminal port, you will travel to the Islands by high-speed boat.
It is approximately 50 mins by high-speed boat from the Port, or approximately 75 mins by ferry. The voyage by boat is still a magnificent part of the trip to the rich Koshiki islands. But the best parts are the blue sea, green mountains, fresh seafood, and especially the friendly Islanders that will welcome you warmly.
The Koshiki islands . . . there is no doubt that you will enjoy different geography for each individual island. One of the islands contains an admirable precipice that took shape 80 million years ago, in the Cretaceous Era. We recommend you to cruise or to sea-kayak around the island, so as to enjoy different views of the landscape compared to the views from the island.
The magnificent sea cliffs, the unique lakes, the native land of the lily species, lilium speciosum, the deciduous and coniferous forests. . . the island is full of rare natural landscapes. The island is renowned for trawling various kinds of fish, but particularly Kibinago (Silver-stripe round herring). The surrounding seas are rich with fresh seafood.
There aren’t many islands in Kagoshima where you can experience a day trip, for many islands are far from the mainland. But since the Koshiki islands are relatively close, a day trip is possible. However, the Koshiki islands offer many lodges that provide excellent hospitality with many delicious meals.
